Making Remaking
- 1 yard of outer fabric (or fashion fabric) – historically this would be trade wool
- 1 yard of lining fabric – historically a cotton calico
- Thread to match
- Pins
- Ruler
- Chalk / pilot frixion pen / other water soluble or heat vanishing pen / pencil
- Fabric Scissors
- Double fold bias tape or 1” wide ribbon
- Zipper foot attachment
*Optional materials:
- 4 to 6 large buttons for closure if desired
- Separating zipper (size depends on your finished vest)
- Beads
- Heat bond or scrap fabric for appliqué
- An iron to press seams open
**The regular sewing foot on standard sewing machines accommodates a 5/8 of an inch seam allowance, which is included on the pattern pieces. But add an extra inch of seam allowance and use French seams if you want your vest to be very durable.

Print this pattern on standard letter size paper (8.5”x11”) and assemble it with tape. Check your printer’s settings to be sure it is printing at actual size and not scaled down. There are four pattern pieces in this file, and each have room for alterations. They include the seam allowance, hem allowance, and enough scrap to make two welt pockets if you desire.
Please refer to the size chart to see which size is best for you.

For those who are just starting to sew or haven’t sewn before, here is an explanation of the sewing terminology used in this project.
Seam allowance is the extra amount of fabric you will need to accommodate your stitches. It can be anywhere from 5/8 of an inch to one inch and is usually included in patterns. If you are working from the patterns provided here a seam allowance is already included.
Seams are what you call the stitching on the garment. A seam line is the exposed line of stitching that sews the pieces together.
Hems are the finished ends of a garment. Finished means the cut edges have been sewn in a way that keeps the fabric from fraying.
Fraying is when the fabric comes apart on you. If you have ever cut fabric and had the cut part shed or get stringy that is considered fraying.
Raw Edge is the part of the vest that doesn’t have a hem or is left otherwise exposed and has potential to fray. Not to be confused with the selvedge, which is the edge of the fabric that is self finished.
Bias Tape is a fabric strip that has its raw edges folded in, and comes in single or double fold. It’s used for finishing raw edges or for decoration, and is essentially a long tape cut from the stretchiest part of the fabric, so it can be shaped easily to curves or straight lines.
Right Sides and Wrong Sides are terms you will hear a lot. Essentially the side of the fabric you want to have facing outward or seen on your finished project is called the right side. The wrong side of the fabric is on the inside of the vest, next to the body and has all your sewing, seams, and marks.
Notches are the small triangles marked on the pattern pieces to help you match up difficult curves and guarantee your piece fits together as it should. Each notch lines up with a corresponding notch on appropriate pattern pieces, so for example notches on pattern piece A will match with notches on pattern piece B and so on.
